9 Tips To Feel at Home in Your New Apartment

Did you know that around 39 million people in the U.S. live in apartments and call them home? Sometimes moving into a new apartment can leave us feeling like we can’t do much because we don’t own it, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. There are quite a few things you can do to make your new apartment your own.

Read on to learn our top tips.

1. Goodbye Boxes

This might sound obvious, but do not leave boxes around because this will not make your apartment feel homey. Take time out of your schedule to sort out everything in the boxes and recycle them, so you don’t have to deal with this eyesore.

As you take items out of each box, try to keep apartment organization at the top of your mind. It might be best to empty one box at a time and find a home for everything in the box before you move on to the next box. Tackling one box at a time will make it seem less overwhelming because you won’t have a thousand items to sort through right off the bat.

2. Make Your Bed

Even if you have a few boxes left and not everything has a place yet, nothing says comfy, cozy home like a freshly made bed. Try to get your bed set up right away and take the time to dress it before setting up your other furniture.

You can also decorate your bedroom while you’re at it by adding a dresser or hanging art pieces on the walls. Or take photos of your family and friends and put them on your nightstand or walls to bring some good memories to your new place.

Making your bed will bring a smile to your face at the end of a long moving day, where you can shower and climb into bed without looking for sheets and pillows.

3. Prep Your Bathroom

Take the time to unpack your bathroom items to help bring a sense of familiarity and comfort to your apartment. Small tasks like setting up your medicine cabinet, shower, and vanity area will make a huge difference.

You can also hang pictures or place plants around your bathroom to make it feel more homey. If you don’t want to leave holes on the walls from nails, then we highly recommend using command hooks that won’t leave behind any marks.

4. Open Up Your Space

If you are moving from a larger house to a smaller space and you’re feeling a bit claustrophobic, you can open up the space. One way is to open up your curtains to bring in as much natural light as possible. If you don’t have enough windows, then you can use soft incandescent bulbs in your lamps to replace the natural light from the sun.

5. Paint Walls

If your lease allows you to add some paint to the walls, then this is another way to make your apartment feel more like you. You can paint just one accent wall in each room, or paint all the walls to instantly feel a change.

The key is to choose colors that fit your design and style esthetic.

6. Choose Your Scent

If you weren’t aware, scent is tied to memory. To make your space feel more cozy, then pick smells that bring you a sense of peace and relaxation. Find the perfect candles or wall plugs and place them all over your new apartment.

This will help your space feel connected and cohesive.

7. Get Rid of the Junk

Moving is always a great excuse to get rid of clutter and cut back on extra junk you don’t really use or need. If you find items in your boxes that you haven’t used in months or years, it might be time to donate or trash them (depending on their condition).

As you pull out each item, ask yourself if that items brings you any joy. If it doesn’t then place it in a box of items you are getting rid of.

8. Make Things Feel Cozy

If you opt to not paint, or you can’t paint your apartment, then come up with a color scheme. This will take away the feeling of having a cold and lonely place (especially if you are living by yourself). Keep that color scheme in mind when you are buying throw pillows, area rugs, throw blankets, etc.

9. Host a Dinner

For those that don’t move out of the state and are still local to friends and family, you can host a small gathering or dinner. This will make you feel at home in an instant because everyone you are familiar with will be in your new space.

Also, getting your kitchen up and running will emotionally help you feel connected to your new place. If you’re not quite done unpacking, then you can invite some friends over to help you and treat them to some pizza and drinks or pizza and wings. You can also opt to invite friends and family to help you paint and treat them to dinner or lunch during your paint party.
