Safety Measures in Dade Schools

Students and teachers joined the school back in August and the department was ready with all the safety measures.

Nicole Lauren of CBS4 spoke with Police Chief Edwin Lopez about the safety precautions police are taking.

Lopez stated that safety is always a priority during the school year, and he understands the concerns that parents have while sending their children to school.

“God forbid there might be an incident. We understand that time is of the essence. We saw what occurred in Parkland. We saw what occurred in Uvalde. It’s concerning, and I want parents to know that Miami-Dade County is doing all possible to keep our schools secure “He stated.

Lopez showed Lauren through the command centre, where cops and employees watch cameras, track school buses, and respond to emergency calls.

“For remote surveillance, we have installed over 18000 security cameras. Every school bus in Miami-Dade County is GPS tracked. ShotSpotter is a military-grade ballistic technology system that we have” Lopez stated.

When there is gunshot near a Dade school campus, the ShotSpotter can detect it. The technology can even show police how many bullets were fired.

In addition to this technology, Lopez stated that training is vital to reducing a danger on campus. He stated that performing exercises, such as in an active shooter event, requires a multi-agency collaboration and that all agencies must be on the same page.

Lopez also discussed the existing security measures in place, such as door and gate locks.

“The school has teachers, employees, security guards and administrators at the school gates to their classrooms. A police officer has been deployed at every school” He stated.

Lopez also addressed school threats, emphasizing the “see something, say something” philosophy.

“It is not our objective to arrest children. Our major aim is to prevent accidents and to create connections in order to reduce them. However, there are signals that are being ignored by those who live in their own homes “He stated.

Lopez added that they do risk evaluations of school campuses in order to choose where to hold large-scale active shooter simulations.
